10 gals on instagram taking full advantage of wild California
You may have read the mirror to this blog, “10 guys who embrace California’s wild side on Instagram,” but this is a different animal. tentree believes that these girls are untamable, unstoppable, and know how to get dirty. Without further ado, meet 10 of California’s wildest women!
1) Shannon Bennett- @shannbenntt
Raised by my parents hiking, climbing and camping in the Eastern Sierra, it was only natural for me to do the same with my young family. From a very young age I was intensely drawn to the mountains like a magnet as they intrigued me and inspired me in inexplicable ways. I wanted to know what the world looked like from their summits. I have spent decades exploring the Sierra, but nothing is as cool as raising a family of peak bagging, rock climbing, tree hugging wilderness loving enthusiasts. It is my goal to encourage, inspire, and instill great, simple values in my kids through the undeniable teachings of nature, and by doing so I hope to protect this area that we love so much.
“The biggest adventure you can take is to live the life of your dreams.” (Oprah Winfrey)
2) Kathleen Carney - @katcarney
Growing up on the low lying plains of Kansas, most wouldn't think of me as a mountain girl. My parents took advantage of living in relatively close proximity to Colorado and my four brothers and I were fortunate enough to grow up hiking 14er's, riding class V rapids, and traversing ice fields to see epic waterfalls. Though I'll always claim the flatlands as my "home," I have spent significant time discovering the wonders of the great American southwest and the backcountry of Denali National Park in Alaska. Now I reside in San Diego and get to explore southern California where I have access to some incredible terrain. I look forward to capturing it all and seriously improving my climbing and surfing skills.
"Life is either a daring adventure, or nothing at all." (Helen Keller)
3) Anela Ramos - @rangeranela
From one beautiful place to another: I was born and raised in Hawaii and moved to Santa Barbara for college. After a semester abroad on the South Island of New Zealand, I knew I wanted to spend a life outdoors. I've settled in Inverness, California as a park ranger for Point Reyes National Seashore. My work week is spent helping others plan their own epic adventures in the park. And when I finally get time off for myself, I'm off in search of adventures of my own!
"Tell me, what is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?" (Mary Oliver)
4) Savannah Cummins - @savcum
I'm a Subaru native, for those of you unfamiliar, I live in my Subaru Outback. I chase dry rock and good weather, year round. I'm currently based in Yosemite, CA rock climbing, exploring and taking pictures!
“The wonderful things in life are the things you do, not the things you have.” (Reinhold Messner)
5) Karen Grubb- @mrsgrubby
I’m very fortunate to live where I do. San Luis Obispo, CA (Happiest City in America) is surrounded by beautiful mountains, lakes, and beaches. Growing up here made me really appreciate the outdoors and everything it has to offer. I’m happiest up in the mountains with a little dirt under my nails and grease in my hair. The smell of campfire in the woods, the sound of twigs snapping underneath my feet and running rivers, the chill of the mountain air at dawn…these are the things that keep pulling me back time and time again. I am bound to the outdoors.
“Indeed, some of the days I have spent alone in the depths of the wilderness have shown me that immortal life beyond the grave is not essential to perfect happiness, for these diverse days were so complete there was no sense of time in them, they had no definite beginning or ending, and formed a kind of terrestrial immortality. After days like these we are ready for any fate—pain, grief, death or oblivion—with grateful heart for the glorious gift as long as hearts shall endure. In the meantime, our indebtedness is growing ever more. The sun shines and the stars, and new beauty meets us at every step in all our wanderings.” (John Muir)
6) Bernini Ngo - @bernini_n
I was born in Northern California and grew up in Southern California. I studied architecture in college and didn’t discover my love for the outdoors until after I graduated. My graduation trip was to Yosemite National Park and it was the first time I camped! Prior to that I love traveling and lived abroad for a period. I think living on my own in a foreign country really contributed to my love of exploring and trying new things. I spend my free time mountaineering, rock climbing, scuba diving, and biking. What I love about living in California is that I can do all of that in one weekend; I can spend one day at 14k feet in the mountains and the next day be 60 feet deep in the ocean. I’m basically a California girl and I love everything about living in the Golden State!
“The world’s big and I want to have a good look at it before it gets dark.” (John Muir)
7) Shandra Butcher - @howiwishiwasafish
My name is Shandra , I am 25 years young and originally from Ventura County, California. I have always loved to travel, but life as I knew it was over when I went to live in the Cook Islands to intern as a scuba divemaster. Jungle crusades, crystal clear water and full-fledged island life was a dream come true! My time there sparked my addiction for fresh guacamole and working as a resort divemaster in places like Cozumel, Mexico and later on Oahu, Hawaii. After a year of being back in California and thoroughly roaming the hiking trails and kelp forests, I have partially put my fins away to partake on a cross country road trip with my friend Travis. I have always been a water baby, but now open roads and mountain peaks have stolen my heart.
“The very basic core of a man's living spirit is his passion for adventure. The joy of life comes from our encounters with new experiences, and hence there is no greater joy than to have an endlessly changing horizon, for each day to have a new and different sun.” (Christopher McCandles)
8) Caitlin Cammarata - @peakproject
Hi, I'm 24 and I'm from Northern California. I'm a labor and delivery nurse who has a lot of days off to travel. I love hiking, camping and swimming, and in that order. I work with the organization Waves for Water delivering water filters to impoverished villages who don't have access to clean water.
"There's a race of men that don't fit in, A race that can't stay still; So they break the hearts of kith and kin, And they roam the world at will. They range the field and they rove the flood, And they climb the mountain's crest; Theirs is the curse of the gypsy blood, And they don't know how to rest." (Robert W Service)
9) Tiffany Nguyen- @tiffpenguin
I’m a 28 year old dentist from Redondo Beach that’s constantly looking for ways to feed my wanderlust. Adventuring wasn’t always one of my passions growing up and it wasn’t until recently that I found out I had a serious addiction to it. Finding new places to explore is what I do best and I love capturing my favorite moments outside along the way. Life is short, but I’m determined to take full advantage of the one I was given with hopes to inspire others to get outside and do the same. My travel bucket list is getting longer by the day, but I take every chance I get to take on new adventures and knock another place off the list!
“The world is big and I want to have a good look at it before it gets dark.” (John Muir)
10) Miranda Leconte - @mirandaleconte
Born & raised near Tahoe, California. I’ve been a U.S. Forest Service employee for over two years so I’m lucky enough to both work and play in Desolation Wilderness, the most heavily used wilderness area per acre in the United States. I thrive thousands of feet above sea level. My entire being craves wide open granite, crisp mountain air, tall trees, and crystal clear water. I’m a conservationist, a protector of species & ecological systems, and a defender of the rights of nature. Wilderness is my home, and I challenge myself to think more like a mountain every day.
“Only this simple everyday living and wilderness wandering seems real and natural, the other world, more like something read, not at all related to reality as I know it.” (Randy Morgenson)The post 10 gals on instagram taking full advantage of wild California appeared first on tentree.
