As consumers, we’re notorious for ditching 60 percent of clothing within a year of purchase — which we’re sure you don’t need to be told isn’t sustainable. To ensure you’re just as excited to pull on your jacket next winter, we’ve got all the info you need to keep it in the best condition. From general care instructions to a piece-by-piece breakdown, here’s how we’d recommend caring for your jacket, so it lasts you for years to come. General Tips on How to Care for Your Outerwear

Wash Less This piece of advice is good for both your outerwear and the planet. Try and wash your jacket only when absolutely necessary. This will help minimize wear and tear, and save water. For a messy jacket that's seen a good adventure, try to spot-wash it with a wet cloth or sponge rather than throwing it in the washing machine. When you do send your jacket for a spin, here are a few tips to keep in mind:

• Always double-check the care instructions specific to your jacket, found on the white label inside.
• Wash your jacket inside out.
• Opt for a small amount of environmentally friendly biodegradable detergent that won’t cause any harm if it enters our waterways. (Bonus points if you skip the single-use plastic container.)
• If it fits, put your jacket in a washing bag to protect it from abrasion.

Skip The Fabric Softeners and Dryer Sheets We advise against fabric softeners and dryer sheets for a couple of reasons. While these can increase the softness of your garments, they do so by depositing waxy agents on the surface of the fabric. These single-use products produce a needless amount of waste and emit potentially harmful chemicals into the air. Plus, the waxy residue isn’t good for the longevity of your outerwear. Put Away Dry If your jacket gets wet while you’re wearing it (which is pretty much a given in your rain jacket), always make sure you let it dry in an open space before putting it away. • Wash at a low temperature, Gentle Cycle (Maximum temperature of 30°C)
• Do not bleach
• Tumble dry at a low temperature (Maximum exhaust temperature of 60°C)
• Do not iron
• Do not dry clean

• To fluff the insulation, add tennis balls to the dryer cycle and run at a low temperature

The Recycled Wool Jackets

Wool is naturally stain-resistant, and odour-resistant, so requires less washing. Washing recommendations:

• Wash on the wool or delicate setting and set water temperature to cold.
• Do not bleach.
• Use a mild detergent or wool wash.
• Do not tumble dry.
• Lay flat to dry. (Roll up in a clean towel to absorb excess water.)
