Internet Searches
Each web search emits 10g of CO2. The average person does 3-4 searches per day, around the globe. Let’s assume in North America this number is closer to 15 google searches per day.
In order to get total emissions per day, we multiply 10g of CO2 by 15 to get 150g of CO2.

In order to get annual emissions, we multiply 150g of CO2 per day by 365 days which equals 57,750 g CO2 per year.
150g CO2 x 365 days = 54,750 g CO2 per year
In order to get grams of CO2 into metric tons, we multiply 54,750 grams by the conversion factor 0.000001 and get 0.05475 MT CO2.
54,750 grams CO2 x 0.000001 = 0.05475 MT CO2
Phone Usage
If a person uses their phone for one hour per day over a year they would emit 1.4 tons of CO2. Given most people use their phone for about 3-4 hours per day, let’s multiply 1.4 tons of CO2 emissions for one hour per day by 3 hours.
1.4 tons CO2 per hour x 3 hours = 4.2 MT CO2
